1Respect: Welcome message from Mrs Badley

Welcome to 1Respect! I am so pleased to be a part of your child's school journey and can't wait to see what this year brings. We already have such a lovely atmosphere in our class with children who are ready to learn and are motivated to do well. I hope that this year will be full of exciting learning and lifelong memories for your children and I look forward to working in partnership with you and your family to ensure that your child succeeds. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.

We are so proud of the children during the recent school closures and how they adjusted to working from home. In the event of another lockdown  we hope that you would continue to support us  by completing the activities that we set.  We will communicate with you and your child regularly through a variety of platforms: this website page, school ping and DB Primary.  Although DB primary is your child's learning platform, do not hesitate to use it to communicate with us for advice and support about your child's learning. Home learning

Please continue to read daily with your child. Books are assigned to your child via 'Bug Club'. All books are at your childs reading level. Please recap learned graphemes with your child as they read and refer to their 'sound mats' when necessary (e.g. 'ai' in 'rain' and 'ea' in 'treat'.)

Use this link to access the website and check your childs 'home learning' book for their username and password. Our school access code for this site is axpn.

I can see how your child is getting on with their online reading and will allocate new books when necessary.

Your child should complete writing, spelling and grammar activities daily.  Please make use of our online learning platform, DB primary (link can be found in the bottom right hand corner) for allocated 'English' activities. Your childs username and password can be found in their 'home learning' exercise book.  I can monitor these activities and will allocate new ones when necessary.

I have also sent home a 'home learning pack' which include a range of writing activities for you to complete with your child. Please check below regularly updated writing activities that I would like your child to complete in their exercise books. I will also update our class page on DB primary with useful, tips, tools and resources for you to use. Please dont hesitate to use this platform to communicate any advice you may need with me. I will try my best to support you.

Your child should complete a maths activitiy daily. Please check this page regualrly for updated guidance, advice and skills that should be taught and revisited.

This terms news:

Any important news for the current term can be found here.

  • It is important to ensure your child has their name in all items of school uniform and PE kits.
  • Please ensure that your child brings a water bottle into school every day

In Year 1, we ask children to read at least three times a week with an adult at home. Once your child has read, please sign their reading record book. Every time your child reads they will receive a raffle ticket for our weekly reading raffle! If their raffle ticket is lucky enough to be picked, they will receive a prize on a Friday. You have to be in it to win it!

Homework will be set on a Friday and will be due in on the following Wednesday. A Maths and English homework will be given to your child. The homework will link to what we have been learning in class.

Children will also receive spellings on a Friday. These will be practised throughout the week at various times and will be tested on the following Friday. Please practise these with your child at home.

In Year 1, we have PE lessons every Wednesday and Friday (1B) Thursday and Friday (1R). Please make sure your child has a white t-shirt, black shorts or leggings and black pumps or trainers. Please ensure any earrings are removed in preparation for our lesson. If they cannot be removed, please show your child how to cover them using plasters.

As we are promoting healthy lifestyles, the children are provided with a piece of fruit each day. They can eat these at play times.

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a water bottle into school each day. Your child's name must be clearly visible on the bottle.

Letters and Sounds

Reading is a vital part of your child's education and in Year 1 we continue the journey from EYFS and teach your child a vast array of phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (the written form of the sound). We teach letters and sounds daily and throughout all lessons we refer to the application of phonics in word reading.

If you have access to a computer or tablet, these links will be helpful in encouraging your child to become more confident in recognising phonemes and graphemes through playing games.

We are also encouraging parents to go on the website https://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/ as it is a really good programme with lots of fun activities.

Talk for Writing

Our core text is called ‘Look Up' by Nathan Byron. We will be exercising our writing skills when we explore this text in detail. It is a magical book about a girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut and watching meteor showers.

Here are some English actvities that you can choose to do online if you have access to a computer.

In our Maths work we will be exploring the place value of numbers up to ten. We will be comparing and ordering numbers and objects. We will be representing numbers in a variety of duifferent ways, including placing numbers on the number line. This will lead on to addition and subtraction and interpreting the symbols associated with these calculations.

We are also loooking at our x2, x5 and x10 multiplication facts.

Here are some websites to play some games that will help to exercise our mathematical brains:
