This terms news:

Any important news for the current term can be found here.

  • It is important as we begin our school routines to ensure your child has their name in all items of school uniform and PE kits.

In Year 1, we ask children to read at least three times a week with an adult at home. Once your child has read, please sign their reading record book. Every time your child reads they will receive a raffle ticket for our weekly reading raffle! If their raffle ticket is lucky enough to be picked, they will receive a prize on a Friday. You have to be in it to win it!

Homework will be set on a Friday and will be due in on the following Wednesday. A Maths and English homework will be given to your child. The homework will link to what we have been learning in class.

In Year 1, we have PE lessons every Tuesday. Please make sure your child has a white t-shirt, black shorts or leggings and black pumps or trainers. Please ensure any earrings are removed in preparation for our lesson. If they cannot be removed, please show your child how to cover them using plasters.

As we are promoting healthy lifestyles, the children are provided with a piece of fruit each day. They can eat these at play times.

Water Bottles

Please ensure your child brings a water bottle into school each day. Your child's name must be clearly visible on the bottle.

Letters and Sounds

Reading is a vital part of your child's education and in Year 1 we continue the journey from EYFS and teach your child a vast array of phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (the written form of the sound). We teach letters and sounds daily and throughout all lessons we refer to the application of phonics in word reading.

If you have access to a computer or tablet, these links will be helpful in encouraging your child to become more confident in recognising phonemes and graphemes through playing games.

Talk for Writing

Our core text is called 'Whatever Next!' by Jill Murphy. We will be exercising our Talk for Writing skills when we explore this text in detail. It is a magical book about a little bear who flys to space and has a picnic on the moon. He is joined by a friend but his adventure is cut short because he needs to return to Earth for a bath.

In our Maths work we will be exploring the place value of numbers up to ten. We will be comparing and ordering numbers and objects. We will be representing numbers in a variety of duifferent ways, including placing numbers on the number line. This will lead on to addition and subtraction and interpreting the symbols associated with these calculations.

Curriculum Subjects
