PSHE
At Beamont, we ensure that Personal, Social, Health Education is at the core of our teaching and learning and that it enables our children to become independent, confident, resilient and healthy young people who are learning about themselves and how to make responsible choices in regards to their physical and mental health. Being a school with above national average percentages of Pupil Premium and English as an Additional Language children, and being situated in an area with high levels of deprivation, we recognise the importance of excellence in PSHE for our children and their families. We aim to equip children will fundamental and essential skills for life and intend for them to leave us well informed about and prepared for life outside school, knowing and valuing who they are and how their uniqueness is something to celebrate, knowing how to tackle and overcome barriers they face in life and with the ability to make responsible decisions as they work towards career and life choices and grow into young adults.

Teaching of PSHE at Beamont Primary School
- We deliver 6 units of work in our PSHE lessons that encompass both PSHE and RSE. These half termly units are delivered during weekly whole class lessons. The units are carefully sequenced to ensure knowledge and skill progression – maximising learning and development.
- Being Me in My World
- Celebrating Difference
- Dreams and Goals
- Healthy Me
- Relationships
- Changing Me
- These units have links with safeguarding, British values, personal and school values, rights and responsibilities, SUMO and Growth Mindset.
- Units of learning are sequenced in a way that ensures that they are covered simultaneously across the year groups. Each year begins with a ‘Being me in my world’ unit and ends with a ‘Changing me’ unit.
- Lessons are also sequenced:
- Connect us
- Calm me
- Open my mind
- Tell me/Show me
- Let me Learn
- Help me reflect
- Closure
- The delivery of our PSHE curriculum is supported by linked assemblies and songs, class characters, end of unit and social and emotional themed reading spine. Each child has a PSHE journal where learning is evidenced and can be reflected on. Each class room has a ‘We Belong’ board which addresses relevant and common themes within the class and school.
- Our children are encouraged to use and apply the skills they learn in PSHE to their everyday life and to make links to other areas of learning.
- Our PSHE curriculum deals with the diverse beliefs, values and attitudes that individuals and societies hold. It helps our children to understand themselves and their community and to learn how to communicate their feelings and thoughts appropriately.
- We use Picture News to expose children to current affairs, discover their interests and bring the world closer to their everyday lives.
- The broad coverage of subjects, issues and events inspire, motivate and engage our children and it gives us opportunities to gain knowledge of their interests and subjects that they are passionate about. Whilst sharing Picture News materials, our children are given opportunities to demonstrate respect and tolerance.
Exposure teaches:
- If they want to make a difference, they have to have the confidence to speak out.
- They must develop resilience. If at first, they do not succeed, develop ideas further, do not give up!
- A range of current issues including political, religious, cultural, environmental, social, moral, spiritual.
- About British Values, making them relevant and meaningful and develops links between personal, school and community values.
